Synopsis

Hinako is a surf-loving college student who has just moved to a small seaside town. When a sudden fire breaks out at her apartment building, she is rescued by Minato, a handsome firefighter, and the two soon fall in love. Just as they become inseparable, Minato loses his life in an accident at sea. Hinako is so distraught that she can no longer even look at the ocean, but one day she sings a song that reminds her of their time together, and Minato appears in the water. From then on, she can summon him in any watery surface as soon as she sings their song, but can the two really remain together forever? And what is the real reason for Minato’s sudden reappearance?

VOD Releases: Humming a Cheerful Tune

August 5th, 2020

Lake Michigan Monster

It is a very busy week for VOD releases, but sadly this is mostly a case of quantity over quality with most of them not earning much buzz. There are three films that stand out, though—Lake Michigan Monster, House of Hummingbird, and Ride Your Wave—and a couple of others that will appeal to adult animation fans and family audiences. New on Disc: Riding the TV-on-DVD Wave

August 4th, 2020

Ride Your Wave

TV on DVD is dominating the home market this week and it is even more dominant next week. Unfortunately, while there are a lot of TV releases this week, we don’t have many that are prime releases. Fans of Doctor Who will want the latest Tom Baker Blu-ray set. His Dark Materials is working better as a TV series than it did as a movie. The two biggest theatrical releases of the week were both animated. Ride Your Wave is the better film, but Promare has the better extras. Both are contenders for Pick of the Week and in the end Ride Your Wave wins the title. More...

Theater Averages: A Match Made in Heaven

February 27th, 2020

Emma

Emma played matchmaker with audiences and succeeded to the tune of $234,000 in 5 theaters for an average of $46,896. It has significant expansion planned for this weekend and an opening like this is a hopeful sign. On the other hand, I don’t think Come and See will expand significantly, as re-releases rarely do. That said, it did earn $16,053 in one theater, so that theater is happy they booked it. It isn’t looking as bright for Seberg. Granted, it did earn an average of $15,727 in three theaters; however, it was very front-loaded and that’s a bad omen going forward. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Will Emma Make Audiences Fall in Love?

February 21st, 2020

Emma

There are plenty of well-reviewed limited releases on this week’s list, including Emma, which is also earning the loudest buzz. I’m personally most interested in seeing Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memories Doll, but True Fiction, Vitalina Varela, and some others are also intriguing. More...
