Synopsis

Caius Martius "Coriolanus", a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuse to support him, Coriolanus's anger prompts a riot which culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius to take his revenge on the city.

Blu-ray Sales: True to Form

June 13th, 2012

True Blood: Season Four led all new releases and earned top spot on the Blu-ray sales chart. During its first week of release, it sold 369,000 units and generated $12.93 million in revenue. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 34%, which is low for the format as a whole, but very strong for a TV on DVD release. More...

DVD Sales: Truth Wins Out

June 12th, 2012

True Blood was the only major release on this week's DVD sales chart crushing newcomers and holdovers alike. It sold 717,000 units / $21.52 million during its opening week, which is fantastic for a TV on DVD release. More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for May 29th, 2012

May 28th, 2012

It likely won't be a strong week on the home market. There's only one prime release, True Blood on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack. It is an excellent show and the Blu-ray is a clear contender for Pick of the Week, but as a TV on DVD release, I doubt it will sell as many units as the average first-run theatrical release sells. The biggest first run release is Man on a Ledge, but it did so poorly in theaters that I doubt it will have a real impact on the home market. True Blood isn't the only contender for Pick of the Week. Goon's Blu-ray Combo Pack is on that list. The price of the Combo Pack dropped since my review went online and at $15, it is the Pick of the Week, or should I say Puck of the Week. Also of note, Degrassi: Season 11, Part 1 - Buy from Amazon would also be a contender for Pick of the Week, but the full season set will likely be significantly cheaper on a price-per-minute basis. Per Theater Chart: Pina Dances to the Top

January 25th, 2012

There were only three films this past weekend to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater average, and none of them were new releases. Pina finally expanded playing in ten theaters, while it climbed to the top of the per theater average with $13,667. It should hit its first major milestone soon. A Separation doubled its theater count and saw its per theater average grow to $12,986. It too should reach its first milestone sooner rather than later. The final member of the $10,000 club was We Need to Talk About Kevin with an average of $10,530 in seven theaters. The best new release of the week was Crazy Horse with $7,963 in its lone theater. However, it was a Wednesday release and if you include its first two days of release, it earned $12,336. If it were a Friday release, it likely would have reached the $10,000 market. More...

Limited Releases are in Full Bloom

January 20th, 2012

Among the number of limited releases coming out this week, there are a surprisingly high number of films earning overwhelmingly positive reviews: Carol Channing: Larger Than Life, Coriolanus, Crazy Horse, and The Pruitt Igoe Myth. Unfortunately, three of those four films are documentaries and those rarely earn any measure of mainstream success. I don't think there's enough buzz behind Coriolanus to make up the difference. Can Limited Releases Pick Up the Slack?

December 2nd, 2011

Since there are no wide releases this weekend, the box office will be looking to limited releases to help boost the numbers. Last year the biggest release was The Warrior's Way, which made just over $3 million during its opening weekend. Obviously no limited release is going to match that this weekend. However, The Warrior's Way finished with less than $6 million and that figure might be within reach for a couple limited releases. Shame has the best shot at reaching that level of box office success, but Outrage is also earning great reviews. More...
