It’s likely no big surprise to see last week’s juggernaut release retain its spot as the widest release this week. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuted in 4,345 locations and went on to collect an impressive $106 million in its opening weekend and currently enjoys a six-day domestic total of $131.33 million. The latest Marvel feature retains its opening theater count, once again making it the only film currently playing in over 4,000 movie houses.

The wait is over for fans of Ant-Man as the follow-up has finally made its way into theaters—4,345 of them to be exact. That makes it the 40th-widest release of all time, placing itself firmly in between two other franchise sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Its forerunners, Ant-Man, and Ant-Man and the Wasp started out in 3,856 and 4,206 theaters respectively. The third and latest installment of the franchise brings back Paul Rudd as the titular character, while containing a bevy of big name talent including Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Bill Murray, among others.

August continued to pad 2016’s lead over 2015 in the year-over-year comparison. It managed this feat almost entirely due to Suicide Squad, which is on pace to hit $300 million. The next best film was Sausage Party, which might make $100 million, if it gets a push over the top. September won’t be as strong as that. This is no surprise, as the month is one of the biggest dumping grounds on the calendar. That said, studios have been working to make the end of the month a lot more productive and there are a few potential hits. The biggest of these is The Magnificent Seven, which is expected to crack $100 million, maybe even $150 million. Meanwhile, Sully and Storks both have a limited chance at $100 million. Last September, the biggest release of the month was Hotel Transylvania 2 with pulled in $169.70 million. I don’t think The Magnificent Seven will match that, so we might need a surprise $100 million hit for 2016 to come out on top.

If you look at our list of franchises, none have made more money in as few installments as Transformers has earned. On the other hand, if you look at the top ten franchises, none of them have earned as much critical scorn as the Transformers films have earned. Only the first one managed to come close to overall positive reviews. Depending on who you talk to, the most recent installment, Transformers: Age of Extinction, has been called the best of the sequels or the worst of the sequels. Which camp do I fall under?

It's another bad week on the home market. According to Amazon.com, the biggest release of the week is the fifth season of Merlin, which is a British TV show. Gabriel Iglesias' latest Stand-Up Concert DVD is right behind. The rest of the top five is filled with a canceled cable show and a poorly reviewed limited release. The best release of the week is Naked LunchCriterion Collection Blu-ray, which is great, but not quite Pick of the Week material. (It is just too bizarre for most people.) Fortunately, Lincoln on Four-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack finally arrived and I was able to review it. Despite it not coming out this week, or this month, it is still the Pick of the Week material. It towers that high above this week's releases. I do hope more people check out Sexy Evil Genius on DVD than its sales ranking indicates.
